Peter,

I am an 8-year old child calling you from India.I would like to ask you some questions about the upcoming release,i.e. Cahills vs Vespers:Book three:The dead of night(I can't wait for the book, though!).It's OK if some of my questions are to be kept a secret;just answer as many as you can.

Q.1)Why is a picture of a telescope shown on the front cover?
Q.2)The dead of night is also the name of an old movie. Is the book somehow connected to it?
Q.3)Is the great leader you are talking about on the 39 clues message board Leanardo Davinci?

Bye,
Eshan
Admin Reply:
Hello, Eshan!  I will do my best to answer your questions:  1) The telescope is a hint to the plot of Book 3.  I recommend you look very closely at it.  2) No, it’s not related.  3) Hmmm, that’s something that must indeed remain a secret.  Thanks for writing, and my best to you and all the great 39 CLUES readers in India!

I have a suggestion, scince no one can keep up with the 39 clues online branch leaders, how about we test our skills (each seperate branch) and whoever wins the games can be leader (Janus:3 leaders). Plus, so everyone can know, put it on the 39 clues homepage!
Thanks,
Alex Cahill

I think that’s a great idea, Alex!  Are you up for the challenge of organizing this daring plan?  Because whew, I’ve got my hands full with authorly duties to THE DEAD OF NIGHT!  (If I were you, I’d contact the all-knowing Noah S.)

Hiya, Mr. Lerangis!

I know you're not allowed to spoil Dead of the Night, but what are you allowed to tell us about what we might expect in the rest of the series? Deaths? Betrayals? Competition between Ian and Evan?

It's okay if you can't answer, of course! I feel honored just to be talking (typing?) to you right now. You and all the other 39 Clues authors are absolutely amazing in every way. I think it was the 39 Clues series that really inspired me to start writing. I want to publish a novel one day, even though my parents think I can't do it, but for now, I'll stick to writing FanFictions about the 39 Clues.

Gosh, I'm rambling. But seriously - you're epic! (Just between you, me, and, well, everyone that sees this, The Sword Thief was my favorite 39 Clues book.)

I'm on a quest to meet all the 39 Clues authors. I've only met Mr. Riordan so far, but I'm trying to convince my school's PTA to sign up for a book talk from you. So far, it's not working though. The last guy that came was a motivational speaker who was rather boring. Eh. I'm trying!

I hope I get to meet you one day and tell you how much you've changed my life. But until then, write on!

-Janina H.

Hello, Janina!  Thank you for the kind words.  I’m delighted you’ve been inspired by the 39 Clues, and I’m proud to be part of that.  FanFictions are great, and I urge you to continue on and also to develop your own great stories.  As for school visits, I do a lot of them, so feel free to direct your teacher, librarian, or PTA to the Author Visits section at the link above.  Thanks for writing — and though I can’t say much about the upcoming CAHILLS VS. VESPERS books, I can pretty much say you’re on the right track with your predictions, but there are some huge surprises in store!

Oh hello Peter!

I've always wanted to talk to you. You seem to be a young, enjoyable, funny writer. You're one of my favorite 39 Clues authors.

One question: That small drawing on the base of the statue on the cover of "A King's Ransom"? Is that somehow connected to the whole series? Because I...uh...kinda researched and I found out it was a combination of erm...6 or 7 countries; 3 of which visited by Amy and Dan.

It's okay if you'd like to keep that a secret. I was just curious about it. Then there's the whole astrological business on the covers.

You guys are really creative, but why must you publish so late?

By the way, I'm 14 in a week, and I'm still a really big fan of the 39 Clues series. My aunt says you guys are good as well.

I hope you can try visit the Philippines. My home country. Bit far, from US of A, don't you think?

Hope you're safe from the Vespers,
Kate 😀

Hello, Kate!  Many thanks for the kind words.  And you are one incredibly astute reader — in fact, you are the FIRST ONE on this Guestbook to have found that hint!  Now you need to figure out exactly which country it is.  Look closely for another hint.  (THAT answer I can’t reveal or confirm, but I have a feeling you’ll figure it out.)  Thanks for writing, and holiday greetings to you and your aunt, and all of our amazing fans in the Philippines.

Hiya! Are you doing something special for Christmas? All the kids are lucky because we have somedays off.My teacher is so strict.I am so scared from her.Did you decorate yor christas tree?
P.S.Merry Christmas

Hello, Aman!  We will have a typically crazy Christmas this year.  My wife is a musician who performs for families in NYC during the weekends.  So on Christmas Day, my sons and I will be seeing her show at the Setai Hotel, then we will drive to Long Island to have a family gathering with my parents and siblings.  On December 26 we drive out to Cambridge, MA, to visit my wife’s family!  Whew.  As for a tree, that’s complicated too.  Our kitchen is being renovated, so all the supplies and appliances are in the living room, and we have no space for a tree!  So we’ll have to wait until the construction is done.  We are eagerly looking forward to all of it!  All best to you and your family.

Hi Peter!

I got A King's Ransom yesterday, and absolutely loved it. Do you know when we're going to get to see a sneak peek of The Dead of Night or when the title and cover of Book 4 is going to be released?

Thanks for answering, and Merry Christmas!
Admin Reply:
Hello, Carsyn, Merry Christmas to you too.  Wow, I’m impressed you’ve already read A KING’S RANSOM!  (I passed your comment on to Jude, who was delighted to read it.)  We don’t yet have a date for the DEAD OF NIGHT sneak peek or the cover/title reveal for Book 4, but I’m told both are going to happen “soon.”  My source tells me to keep an eye on the Cahill Message Boards for all news of that nature!

I read all ur books! Can u send me a summary of the newest 1?
Admin Reply:
Sure.  Here’s the official summary for THE DEAD OF NIGHT (which will be published on March 6):

“The Vespers have crossed a line. Amy and Dan were devastated when the Vespers kidnapped seven Cahills around the world, holding them hostage until Amy and Dan delivered an impossible ransom. But at least the hostages were Cahills — members of the world’s most powerful family, trained to face all odds.“Now the Vespers have gone too far. They've kidnapped Atticus, an innocent 11-year-old boy and Dan’s only friend. Now Dan and Amy are in the struggle of their lives. Because if they can’t outwit the Vespers, the unthinkable will happen . . . Atticus will die.”

What do you know about the 39 Clues movie being produced by Steven Spielberg and Deborah Forte, directed by Brett Ratner and distributed by Touchstone Pictures? If it's a professionally-made feature film, the auditions will be found through agents, right?
Admin Reply:
Hello, Bonita!  Yes, the auditions will undoubtedly be held through an agent call, but I haven’t heard a thing about them yet.

Hey Mr.Peter! I feel odd because im only on book 6 in 39 clues but I come on here 24/7 for spoilers! So these questions are random but what book does ♥Amy♥ meet Evan? And in book 6 when Irina dies (I read ahead!) is she truly dead? 🙁

P.S= Cant wait till Christmas to get books 8,9,and black book!
Admin Reply:
Hello!  Evan doesn’t enter our story until THE MEDUSA PLOT.  Two years have gone by between the end of the 39 Clues search (Book 10) and the start of CAHILLS VS. VESPERS.  During that time, Amy met Evan.  And as for Irina, sadly, yes.

Hello, Eli!  Well, it’s ONE of the locations … but not the main one.  I don’t think anyone’s figured that one out, even though there are some hints.  ’Nuff said.  Thanks for the holiday wishes, and same to you.  There is no such thing as too much chocolate.

Dear Peter Lerangis

How long does it take to write a book? What day did you come up with the 39 clues? How do you make the book? How do you get them in stores?

Sincerly,
Nicholas
Admin Reply:
Hello, Nicholas!  Well, books can take anywhere from a couple of months to a year or more depending on how much research and how many pages.  The 39 CLUES books generally take about nine or ten months, but that includes idea, outline, research, and writing.  The idea for the 39 CLUES started with Rick Riordan and his editor at Scholastic, so I didn’t come up with it at all!  I did come up with the ideas for my individual books, though: THE SWORD THIEF, THE VIPER’S NEST, the second part of VESPERS RISING, and the upcoming THE DEAD OF NIGHT.  I began working on SWORD THIEF in January 2008, VIPER in February 2009, VESPERS RISING in July 2010, and DEAD OF NIGHT in January 2011.
To make a book, a writer needs to work with a publishing company.  That company has editors who help with the writing by making great suggestions.  Then the writer takes those suggestions and writes a second draft, and even a third or fourth, until the story is just right.  After the writer is done, the publishing company makes sure an artist creates a perfect cover image.  After all that, the book is sent to yet ANOTHER company, which has huge printing machines that make the actual pages and cover.  Thousands of them!  Then those books are mailed off to bookstores, to be put on the shelves.  Hope this answers your question!

Hi Peter!
Can I ask you some things? Here's the list:
1. Is The 39 Clues+The Vespers true?
2. Do you use a lot of poison (since your a Lucian, and I am too!)?
3. Will you come to San Jose, in California?
Admin Reply:
Hello, Brian!  Sure you can ask, and I’ll do my best to answer.

It’s as true as fiction can be.
Poison?   Not guilty — I’m a Janus!
I would love to come back to San José!  I had a great time there in 2009, when I visited the Almaden Country School and Hicklebee’s (which is one of my favorite places in the world!).  So you can be sure if someone invites me again, I will say yes.

From the time I began work on THE DEAD OF NIGHT until the final draft covered about eight or nine months.  And yes, I recognized that code — Cahill training prepares me for these things.
