Hey, do you know what "find stan" means in a king's ransom? Is it important, or just something random?
Admin Reply:
Aha!  Yes, it is indeed important and not random at all!

Hello, Roshni!  I’m so glad that our books have affected you so deeply.  It means a lot to know this!  As for the Missions, the list is as follows: The Acropolis Raid, Book 1, Book 2, Card Pack 1, Book 3, Book 4, Book 5, Book 6, and Card Pack 2.  There’s an extra slot in the medals page, but you’ll have to wait and see what you need to do to earn that one!  It’s a surprise, and I’m not even sure what it is!

Hello Peter,
I read your article on the NY Daily Times about SOPA and I couldn't agree more. I wrote an article on it, thanks!

Thanks for the heads-up, Kim.  I think you really nailed it.  It’s important to bring these issues to light, because some people just haven’t bothered to ask the right questions, as you have.

Hi, I was just confused about something. I have your book, The Vipers Nest, but I don't understand how the title came up and what it has to do with the story. Could you tell me?

Thanks!
Admin Reply:
Hello, Jed.  Yes, I know that title can be confusing.  It’s meant in a symbolic way, to say that Amy and Dan visited the center of a very evil place (a nest of vipers) when they discovered the Tomas stronghold.

Hi again. It's just that something has been bothering me. Under the medals page, it says I have completed 4 missions (TMP, AKR, card pack mission, and the already unlocked mission "the acropolis raid") But then it says that I have 6 more missions to complete. I have the 4 missions from the last few books and the mission from the upcoming card pack. But that leaves one more.... Does this mean we have one more mission to complete even after all of the books are finished?
Admin Reply:
Great sleuthing, Chris! It sounds like you’ve completed these four missions:The Acropolis RaidBook 1Book 2Card Pack 1
And you have these Missions still to go:Book 3Book 4Book 5Book 6Card Pack 2
You’re right that there’s an extra slot in the medals page — but you’ll have to wait and see what you need to do to earn that one!

What made you become an author?

Im asking because you are a great author
Admin Reply:
Thank you, Dev!  I became an author because I grew up loving to tell stories.  I was the oldest in my family, so I was always babysitting and entertaining my younger siblings and cousins.  In my spare time I liked to curl up with a book and read for hours.  One summer evening I read a great story by Jack London called “To Build a Fire,” which took place in the frozen North, and I felt myself pulled in to the story so deeply that I started shivering.  I was amazed at how powerful that was — the idea that a writer could make that happen, using words and nothing else!  I think that was the first time I thought about becoming an author.  As I got older, I became afraid of trying to do that professionally.  I thought about going to law school, and I had a career as an actor for a few years.  But later, I couldn’t stay away from trying to make it as a writer.  And it worked.

Hey Peter!

Yeah it's me again. 🙂 I was wondering:

1. What is the ring? (The one that Amy has.)
2. What does it do? I have been so puzzled! My cousin has gotten me into this series. I thank and love her SOOOO much for that. The books have been great. I'm not sure about Evan though... he seems too well too cool about everything. I don't think I trust him that much. (Know offence to Amy).

Love always~ Monica.

Oops, those two questions, alas, fall squarely into the area I mention at the top of the page (between the red diamonds).

Hey!

(Talking about the 39 clues series.) I want to know more about Alistair. Was he ever in love? What made him become interested in finding the clues at the start? Please tell me more about his life. (I’m a Alistair fan).

Love always Monica.
Admin Reply:
Hello, Monica.  I am an Alistair fan, too!  He has indeed been in love, and part of his desire to become a successful businessman was to impress a young woman he met in college, who scorned him after he was expelled.  He has a very special reason for finding the Clues, not the least of which is to keep them away from Uncle Bae.  He has a deep connection to Dan and Amy because of what happened to their parents.  They remind him of the lost boy he once was, and he works very hard to make sure they are the ones who discover the Clues, as that was Grace’s plan.  Alistair respects Grace most of all.

Hello again!
What do you do when you get writers block, or do you not get it? Do you sometimes just plan in your head, or do you write everything down?
Admin Reply:
Hi, Elizabeth.  I do get writer’s block, all the time. Especially when I’m starting a book. Sometimes I think and think and think, but mostly I write like crazy.  I find that when I write a lot, maybe the ideas at the beginning don’t make much sense, but just the act of writing improves my thinking.  And slowly but surely, the more I write, the better the idea becomes.  Sometimes if I am really stuck, I go for walks, I try to put myself in unfamiliar situations, I read, I answer Guestbook messages (!!). When you have writer’s block, you’re like a runner at the starting block, shaking out your limbs, jumping up and down nervously, inhaling and exhaling, just marking time before the big run. In the end, you just sit down and stare at the screen until the words come. Then I put one word in front of the other. For me, sometimes it takes a whole day to write a paragraph. But once the first page is written, it gets easier and easier. And soon the pages flow out like crazy. Every single time. I hope it happens to you too!

Hi, Peter! I just finished Vespers Rising and it was AMAZING!!!! I was wondering if you had considered writing a story of Madeleine herself and what all she went through in her life. You're such a fantastic author and I didn't want to put the book down. I nearly cried when I was finished reading about Madeleine, the way you wrote it I can't even describe! Ive wanted to be an author for as long as I can remember and I'm in advanced language arts at school for my writings. Would you have any tips for me as I contine my writing journey? I hope you keep up your FANTASTIC work!

Sincerely,
Alexa
Admin Reply:
Thank you so much, Alexa!  I really enjoyed writing about Madeline, and yes, I would have loved to continue the story.  What a great series hero she would be!  My only advice is to keep reading as much as you can, and never stop trying to figure out what it is that your favorite writers do that makes their stories come to life.  What kinds of words do they use?  What kinds of words to they leave out?  Every great story has an important unanswered question (or questions) that keeps the reader going.  What are those questions in your stories?  The more important they are, they more your story will come to life.  If you’re as interested in stories as I sense you are, and you have a love of writing, then all I can say is keep up the good work!  Write what you absolutely love to write about.  If you feel there’s a story you HAVE to tell, one that’s unique and personal to you, then you will probably tell it better than anyone else.  So write as much as you can, get the best advice that you can, listen to people who know how to make your writing improve, and let the joy of it fill your life!

Hello, Julia!  I believe Amazon still has some copies you can order at this page.  The entire series will be released as eBooks on March 20.  Thanks for writing, and I hope you’re able to get a copy!

Oh. Well, that makes sense.

So do you come up with your ideas as you're writing, or do you plan ahead on a sheet of paper or something? I want to know, so I can try and do better on my essay. Should I plan ahead, or just write?
Admin Reply:
Planning ahead is absolutely essential.  It organizes your thoughts so your readers won’t end up scratching their heads and saying “Whaaa?”  For our 39 CLUES books, we research our topics for weeks, then write out an outline of our books way before we start writing the books themselves.  We discuss the outline with our editors — and most of the time, even that outline goes through several drafts.  So by the time we begin writing, we have a really clear idea of what we're going to say.

Hey Peter!

Remember me - the one who struck gold on New Year's Eve? (Thanks for the tip, by the way... I'm waiting for The Cahill Files in May, not to mention biting my nails after reading the excerpt of The Dead of Night.)

Just one question: Is the 4th book's name Shatterproof???? I've been hearing all sorts of rumours in the 39 clues message board.

Plus, I saw the faded out versions of the cards for The Dead of Night in 39clues.com. Here's what I think about them: http://www.the39clues.com/messageboard/show/14188

Eagerly waiting for March,
Zainab. 🙂
Admin Reply:
Hello, Zainab!  I’m biting my fingernails, too — out of excitement for March 6.  I have an advance copy of THE DEAD OF NIGHT and I can’t wait for others to read it.  As for the title of Book 4, I recommend you keep checking the on-line book sites.  They are usually the first to receive book title info.  But don’t worry, Scholastic is planning a reveal very soon.
Elizabeth Atya wrote on February 8, 2012 at 2:53 AM
Were you assigned to write a book including Japan and Korea, or did you choose to?
Admin Reply:
We began the series with a rough outline of where all ten books would go.  This was meant to provide a suggestion for each of our plots, but we were free to change things, as long as we stuck to the plan for unveiling the elements of the larger story.  The thought was that Book 3 would take place in Japan, and I liked that idea.  But as I got deeper into researching Hideyoshi and developing the plot, I decided the story needed to move to Korea at some point, even though it had not been planned.
Elizabeth Atya wrote on February 7, 2012 at 11:25 PM
Ah, okay. Do you know who originally came up with the idea, or was it just that Scholastic wanted something partially non-fiction and fiction written?
Admin Reply:
It was the brainchild of Rick Riordan and his amazing editor at Scholastic.  They were both very passionate about the idea and developed it together.

Hi Mr.Lerangis,

Are they going to make a movie for the39 clues???!?!?!
Admin Reply:
Hello, Edwina!  Whoa, what a coincidence — the same question twice in a row!  Were you and Amber reading each other’s minds?  Well, as I wrote below, Dreamworks has won the right to make a 39 CLUES movie. That doesn’t they have done it yet — or even that they will do it. It just means they have the right to. I know they’ve commissioned a screenplay and hired a director, so we have our fingers crossed, but no details yet!
