Some people on the Message Board claim they're vespers but they are in Janus or Tomas or whatever. Even one guy said he's Vesper 1! Is this true?
Admin Reply:
I hope not!

Hi Peter,
Will you be writing for The 39 Clues again? Also, will there be a thrid part of the series?
Admin Reply:
Hello, Ariel.  The fourth, fifth, and final books of the series are by Roland Smith, Linda Sue Park, and David Baldacci.  We have no idea if there will be a third series.  (It’s still pretty early on in this one!)

Who exactly chose the names of the characters? Do you know how they were chosen?
Admin Reply:
Hello, Elizabeth.  I assume Rick chose the names of the main characters, because they were in play by the time the rest of us came on board.  As we introduce new characters in our books, we create the names as we go along.

Hi, Peter(yes, it's me...... again.....)

One more thing I'd like to add about Dead of Night(:

You must have a great sense of humor, because Dead of Night was HILARIOUS! Even Dan got some funny lines:D

You did a great job in keeping everyone in character:D

Once again, you did a BRILLIANT job(haha, I sound like Ian:D)!

Hi Peter,

When will the operation trinity book come out? and why on the shatterproof book there is the word MAGELLAN?
Admin Reply:
Hello, Matthew.  Operation Trinity 1 launches in May.  Numbers 2, 3, and 4 are e-books only, and they will launch in June, July, and August.  As for your second question, I am instructed by Cahill Command not to give away any secrets …

Dear Mr. Lerangis,
I go to Chaparral Elementry School and youwill be caoming there soon. I bought one of your books and it is The 39 Clues: The Viper's Nest. I am excited to read it. It looks really good. I look forward to meeting you. I have just one question, how many books have you written?
Sinceraly,
Jaleigh Zachary
Admin Reply:
Hello, Jaleigh!  I’ve written over 160 books.  (Whew.)  Hope you enjoy THE VIPER’S NEST, and I’ll look forward to meeting you too!

Hi, Peter!

I was one of the people who preordered Dead of Night from Amazon! I got it yesterday and I already finished it! It was AMAZING!

When I read some of the parts, I was so shocked that I started talking to the book(:

When I finished the book, I was, like, 'No! There's so much to be explained and revealed!'

Once the book officially comes out, I'll have to ask you some questions:D

Once again, you did a FANTASTIC job on the book and I can't wait for the next Cahills vs. Vespers book!

~Megan

Congrats, Megan!  Great timing!  Yes, you are one of the lucky ones who received the book during the few days when Amazon began shipping them by mistake (which they are no longer doing).  I’m delighted you enjoyed it, and thanks for refraining from revealing spoilers!

Hi Peter
Will there be new names for the cahill files 2,3 & 4
My last question is what is the name of cahills vs vespers book 5 ?
Admin Reply:
Hi, Nicolas!  The answer to your first question is yes.  The answer to your second: I don’t believe a title has been created yet.  Usually, with a 39 CLUES book, the title comes last, after the book has been written.

Thank you for the great advice!

Hi Peter,
Did Sinead Starling get promoted to the Tomas ?
I'm asking because if you add her card then go to your and then click on her card it shows what agent she is and it has the Tomas crest.
If so does that make her brothers Tomas.
Admin Reply:
That is an error.  (Or maybe an act of sabotage by a rogue Tomas?  Hmm … )  Many thanks for pointing this out, Nicolas.  You are an incredibly observant Cahill.  I’ve reported this to the Command, and they have promised to fix it.  All because of your eagle eye!

PLS vist CO. I'm begging you!

Awwww … thanks!  Wish I could.  You’ll have to take it up with Scholastic.  They set the schedule, not I!  Or even better, you may want to suggest an author visit to your teacher or librarian. They can set this up by clicking on the Author Visits link above.

Hi Peter,
My daughters and I saw your presentation with Gordon Korman and Jude Watson last April in Philadelphia. The day was great fun, and we still talk about it! I have a writing question for you today. Have you ever had a fantastic book beginning, and a mind-blowing ending, but been stumped by how to keep things moving in the middle? I'm writing a book for fun, but I'm not having fun this week. I've tried letting it alone for a while, I've tried writing my way out of it, and I've tried chocolate. To mix things up a bit, today I tried oatmeal cookies. Your books never slump. How do you do it?
Thanks 🙂
Tina
Admin Reply:
Hi, Tina.  Chocolate usually does the trick.  Maybe you need more!  Seriously, I hear you.  When I redraft my books, the middle always takes special care, even if it’s been carefully outlined.  You need to pay special attention to two things: how the action and emotions are crucial to furthering the story, and what you can leave out in order to up the tension.  Novels are juggling acts where the balls are unanswered questions — they can’t all be super high-stakes, but the reader should be deeply invested in wanting to know the answers.
I sure do remember that presentation in Philadelphia.  That was so much fun.  We even made a promotional video, deep in the catacombs of the library, but it was difficult to stop cracking up.

Dear Mr Lerangis,

I love your 39 clues books! I have a question: Why can't the books come out earlier? I am so bored because there are no new books, no new missions on the website, and no new card packs coming out. I hope that the next book comes out soon!

Hello, Matthew!  Well, you don’t have much longer to wait — March 6 in the drop date for THE DEAD OF NIGHT!
Nicolas wrote on February 28, 2012 at 12:41 AM
Hi Peter,
On Barnes & Noble webstite it says The Cahill Files Operation Trinity #1.
Does that mean there will be a number #2 ?
Admin Reply:
Hi, Nicolas!  Yes, indeed.  And a #3 and #4!  Operation Trinity 2 is launching in June, and 3 and 4 in July and August.  They will be e-books only.
Reneilda de Leon wrote on February 27, 2012 at 1:42 PM
Hello again, Sir Lerangis! May I just ask why is it that The Dead of Night is more expensive than the other books? It's already released in one branch of a bookstore here in the Philippines. Before it's Php495, now it's already Php529. 🙁
Admin Reply:
Hi, Reneilda.  I have no idea why!  Perhaps the price of books has just risen across the board.

Hi,
I can't wait for you to come to Tx. (Even though its in April I'm still buying the book on the 6th.) I have a question though: Do you and the other authors come together together to discuss ideas?
Admin Reply:
Hello, Amber.  Actually, we do get together from time to time, but to promote the books, not to talk plot.  (Mostly we tell bad jokes and try to make each other laugh.)  We live in different parts of the country, and if any two authors were to discuss/change/add things to the books, it might be disastrous.  It’s vital that EVERY author know every development, or else the plots of future books might be thrown off.  So all ideas go through our editor, who is like an air-traffic controller for plot ideas!  She collects them all and spreads them to everyone.

My daughter and I have done some spying ourselves and managed to get book # 4 of Spy X thru a second hand seller. We are going to donate it to the library or schoo. We feel though, that there should be a #5. Any change for that? Take care, Petra
Admin Reply:
Hello, Petra!  The series, alas, ended at Book 4.  There were plans for a Book 5 and 6, but the publisher pulled the plug unexpectedly for reasons still unclear (but most likely related to the economy at the time).  Very glad you enjoyed the series!

Hi, Peter!

Someone brought this to my attention.

Where have Madison Holt and Ned Starling gone? We haven't heard a lot from them. Will we be seeing them in the future?

Well, that's it. I hope to see you on your tour! I can't wait for Dead of Night!

~Megan

Hello, Megan!  Thanks for the heads-up.  Duly noted!  We shall see if they appear in future books.  You never know with the 39 Clues!  See you on tour!
Clarrissa A. wrote on February 25, 2012 at 11:11 PM
I really, really think that you should come to the Nampa/Boise Idaho area on your tour. All my favorite authors always skip over us. It really stinks sometimes. Only the really bad authors come here. There are plenty of fans of the 39 Clues here. Pretty, pretty, pretty times infinity please with a cherry on top will you please?!?!
Admin Reply:
Hi, Clarrissa!  So sorry to hear that.  But this is only one tour, and I can only go where the publishing company sends me.  I visit schools often (and everywhere!), even when I’m not on a book tour. You may want to suggest an author visit to your teacher or librarian. They can set this up by clicking on the Author Visits link above.

Hello, Mr. Lerangis! 😀

So, I just finished The Dead of Night (Amazon shipped it out early and it was waiting for me when I got back from school today - how lucky is that?! 😉 and I loved it! You did an amazing job! 😀
Admin Reply:
Wow, Gabby — thanks so much for the kind words!  You are extremely lucky — believe it or not, that book was sent by mistake!  Yup, Amazon goofed.  For a period of time they shipped copies of THE DEAD OF NIGHT before the publication date.  Now they have stopped.  So you are one of the fortunate few to get a sneak peek.  I’m super glad to get my first great review, but I hope you don’t mind that I have only printed part of your message.  I left out the “spoiler” parts.
