I just realized that most of the parts where Amy is kind of-I'm not sure what to call it-paired up with different guys were written by you. Why exactly is that? Do you just like to write those parts, or... What?
Admin Reply:
Hello, Elizabeth!  Oh, I think all us 39 Clues writers like to include some of this.  Most authors are romantics at heart!

Hi are you planing to come to Scotland because in the heart of Scotland a small village called Killin is there and I was wondering (again) if you will come? Because your my favourite author! Also why is all the 39 clues books and other american book released later like with the dead of night I was like "I CAN'T WAIT!!!!!!!!!!" but then it got released later... but why?

P.S. Do you like The Hunger Games? Or Harry Potter?
Admin Reply:
Hi, Lesley! I am a big of Harry and Hunger, indeed. I have never been to Scotland, alas, and it is one of my great dreams to go. Many of my friends have been there. Most of them are singers and they say there is an amazing tradition of singing in Scotland. Sorry to hear that the publication is delayed there, but it will be worth the wait!

Hi,
I'm really excited that your coming to Tx. But I already bought the book but I'm still very excited. But I had a question: Did Amy stay with Evan or did she go with Jake?
Admin Reply:
Hi, Amber! Glad you have the book! I’ve promised not to give away spoilers, sorry! Looking forward to Texas. Haven’t been there in years!

Dear Mr. Lerangis,
I am so excited that you are coming to my school, Deer Path Middle School, in a few weeks. I have read the 39 Clues books and am looking forward to reading Dead of Night. I am impressed by the job that you and the other authors did, especially with how you managed to keep the characters the same. How did you plan who would write what book? How did you keep the same characters? How much time did you spend planning the series? Did you all talk while you each were writing the books? Did you write the books in series, or did you all write at the same time? I would be thrilled if you could answer my questions when you come to Deer Path or if you could answer it on your blog. I look forward to your visit.

Hello, JT!  I’m looking forward to visiting your school!  Thanks for the kind words.  When we all came together for planning the series, our editors suggested an order of writing the books, and we agreed.  Most of the plot planning had already happened with Rick Riordan’s great series outline.  We all had a lot of freedom to change and grow our own books, as long as we revealed certain elements of the mystery and made sure not to spoil others!  Generally while one writer is writing a book, the next writer is getting a head start outlining his or her book.  We don’t talk about the books with other writers.  Rather we make sure to discuss all new ideas, all changes, with our editor, who makes sure all the authors receive all the information.

Hello, Deb!  I did an event here in NYC for LitWorld at Book of Wonder, and today I leave for Phoenix.  Then Tucson, Milwaukee, Minneapolis, Chicago, any about a dozen other cities … it’s quite a schedule!

Hi, Peter!

I just wanted to say that I had a great time yesterday at the book signing(Barnes and Nobles in Carle Place; you probably remember me(:). You are such a wonderful speaker and you have such a great personality! You really made a connection with all of the people there, including me. You could tell.:D

The Dead of Night is such an amazing book and I hope it is very successful(but we already know that it will be:D)!

You did a great job with writing a book and I really enjoyed meeting you!

I hope to see you again!

Hello Sir Peter..its me again..xD

i bought CvV3 the moment the bookstore opened!! hahaha..

anyways i have some questions:
#1 - how do the authors write the books of the 39 clues series?? do they need to have the plot/story line first then write the book or do they make their own plot??

#2 - do the authors make the cards as well??

#3 - a card from the CvV3 completes the upper half of the star map and some of the puzzles on the map itself have answers like LEONARDO DA VINCI and this PATTON guy and GUY FAWKES were V (probably V for Vespers) and then there are names of the constellations with numbers under them spelling out BANCROFT..my question is..is Leonardo da Vinci going to have an important part of the story?? are we going to know more about Patton, Fawkes and Bancroft??

sorry..its just nagging my thick skull..xD

thanks and more power!!
(i'll be reading the book while i wait..xD)

Hello, again, Argie!  #1: We do have a basic story line.  Basically it’s there for planning: to make sure we don’t (a) duplicate locations and (b) reveal certain mysteries too early or too late.  We’re free to change everything else.  Often we do, but most of the time we take the plot suggestions and run with them.  #2: No.  #3: Please see the words between the red diamonds above.  We’ll soon find out!

Hi peter. I just wanted to say that you were great at my school today. You were so funny!!!!! Sadly, you didnt pick on me to ask a question. So, my question was "what is the worst book you have ever written". From your opinion. Oh! and i am writing a book myself. I want to be a writer too. But, just writing it for fun. Not for publishing. Ha!
p.s. all of my friends and o thought the presentation was really funny! ( i liked the baby picture of you)
Admin Reply:
Thanks, Debbie!  What a great time I had yesterday at your school!  I think the worst book I ever wrote was a choose-your-own novel based on the movie Dick Tracy.  I think this was in 1990 or so.  The book is out of print, and that’s a relief!  Good luck with your writing.  I will hope to see your name on the spine of a book someday!

Thank you so much for visiting John Daly Elementary School today. Our 4th and 5th grade students were mesmerized by your presentation and laughed out loud at all of your photos and stories. You created a magical and inspirational moment for our students. I can't thank you enough.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Mody

P.S. When are the 39 Clues books going to be made into movies?
Admin Reply:
Hello, Mrs. Mody!  Thank you so much.  The Daly kids were amazing, so attentive and enthusiastic.  You are obviously doing a tremendous job.  (Made me proud to be a Long Islander!)  As for the movie, Dreamworks has the option and we're waiting to hear about a possible schedule.  So fingers crossed, but nothing definite yet.  Regards to all the great readers I met yesterday!

Hi Peter,
Why is there so many mistakes on the Cahill Card system saying that Ian is a Janus, Evan a Toma s(Evan not even a Cahil), Sinead a Tomas, and Amy and Dan a Tomas?
Admin Reply:
Hi, Ariel.  Good question.  I really have no idea, as I’m not involved with the system.  None of the authors are.  You may want to contact the moderator on the39clues.com.  But I will pass your note on!

ONE DAY LEFT!!!! or maybe by the time you answer it might be zero. 🙂

Hey!

I'm soo excited to read the newest book! Can I just say that the 39 clues team has AWESOME writers! I hear your book is amazing... which it will be. 🙂 and yes I am getting used to Alistairs tricks. let me get this staight: Bea (Alistairs Uncle) killed his father? Why?

Yours sincerely,
Monica.
Admin Reply:
Hello, Monica!  Yes, I’m really looking forward to launch day!  I have four events tomorrow (whew).  Bae arranged for Gordon Oh's death so he could take over as head of the Ekat branch.  (Or at least that is what Alistair’s research uncovered.)  Alistair has a very different kind of role in THE DEAD OF NIGHT.  Hope you enjoy it!
Nicolas wrote on March 3, 2012 at 8:57 PM
Hi Peter,
Is Evan a Tomas ?
Admin Reply:
Hi, Nicolas!  Is Evan marked as a Tomas in the system?  If so, that is a mistake and Scholastic will correct it.  (As you know, Evan cannot be a Tomas because he’s not really a Cahill.)  You certainly have a good eye.  You discovered the error with Sinead too.  Many thanks.  Let’s hope a mole has not infiltrated the system!

Mr. Lerangis, I looked on Amazon a couple days ago and saw that the 39 clues The Dead of Night was available. I ordered and read it, but only yesterday did I find out that it wasn't out yet! I was very suprised, but in my opinion the book is awesome! It is a great read!
Admin Reply:
Thank you, Jack!  Your timing was perfect.  You are one of the lucky ones who benefited from Amazon’s goof.  They released the book early by mistake, so for a few days they were shipping orders, and now they’ve stopped until the proper publication date, March 6.  So congrats, and I’m delighted you enjoyed the book!
Brittany wrote on March 3, 2012 at 1:33 PM
Hello 🙂
I have a question, and I sincerely hope you will answer it. Haha. It's just that every book you've written about the 39 clues, well almost, always hints at another "love team" with Amy. Like in Swordthief = Ian. Viper's Nest = Kurt and now in The Dead of Night = Jake! Hahaha. I was just wondering. But Don't worry! I'm loving every bit of it!
Admin Reply:
Hi, Brittany!  I’m not sure what the question is … but I’m glad you’re enjoying the ride!
Thomas Zhang wrote on March 3, 2012 at 5:11 AM
Mr Lerangis,
I am a dedicated fan and expert of The 39 Clues. I even already knew the title for the second Card Pack of Cahills vs. Vespers, which is "The Magellan Heist"! I wish to ask you a question. Although I know that you are not allowed to reveal any crucial secret, I do not think that this is counted. Do you know what this means? There is an puzzle in The Medusa Plot with the answer "Damien is alive"!
Admin Reply:
Hello, Thomas!  You are clearly very astute.  This is one of those cryptic puzzles that I am honor-bound by my Cahill promises to stay away from spoiling.  So stay tuned.
Monica wrote on March 3, 2012 at 3:43 AM
Ello again!

I've need rereading the first series of the 39 clues and I wondering HOW DOD aLSTAIR SURVIVE THE CAVE IN????? I think when he looked around in the cave he found an exit but lied to Amy and Dan. Will that secret ever be reviled in the Cahill vs. Vespers series?

Monica - Out.

Monica, I think you’re on to something.  Sounds like you’ve gotten to know old Alistair very well.
Elizabeth Atya wrote on March 3, 2012 at 1:41 AM
No, what I meant to ask is, is there any specific reason for choosing those names, or did evryone just choose random names that they liked?
Admin Reply:
I don’t really know how the other authors choose character names.  I tend to go with a gut feeling about a name sounds, and I imagine a lot of other authors do, too.  The name “Alistair” gives a different feeling than “Bud,” for example. And how would it feel to have a character like Ian with the name “Mike”? Not quite the same.  Sometimes I’m also influenced by names of people I know or have read about, too.
