Hi Mr. Lerangis!! I am so excited and happy that Unstoppable is coming out!! Thanks to all the writers/publishers/Scholastic etc!!!

I have 2 questions:
1) Who's idea was Unstoppable? Was it Scholastic's, or was it from the fans?!?
2) Will Unstoppable take place a couple years after Cahills Vs. Vespers, when Amy and Dan and everyone is older? Kinda like how it was before, coming in from the clue hunt into the vespers?

Thanks!
Sapphire xx
Admin Reply:
Hi, Sapphire!  (1) Well, in order for the series to exist, Scholastic needs to give the okay.  And authors have to hammer out a series outline.  So the “idea” has to come from them.  But any followup series, like CAHILLS VS. VESPERS and UNSTOPPABLE, can only exist if the series that preceded it was successful.  Which means popular with readers!  So it was the enthusiasm and demand from fans like you that made Scholastic realize how much excitement there would be for a third series.  In other words, pat yourselves on the back, because YOU made it happen!  (2) That’s a good question.  I wasn’t able to be involved in UNSTOPPABLE, so I actually don’t know much about it, but if I were you I’d keep an eye on the MB for announcements.

Hi, Mr. Lerangis,
I have a question about 39 Clues that I hope isn't breaking the spoiler rule.
How come the Vespers aren't killing the hostages, the people he threatened to kill, but he is killing everyone else?
Thanks

Hi, Truman!  Alas, the spoiler beeper is going off like crazy, so I will demur with humble obedience.  Sorry.

Hey Peter!
I have a couple of questions for you!
1. why does it takes so long for a book to get published?
2. how long does it usually take to wright a 39 clues book?
and 3. which book are you most proud of for wrighting?

Thanks for reading Peter! Your work is AWESOME!
Admin Reply:
Hello, Skye!  Thanks for that compliment, it makes my day!  Here you go:

Okay, so a publisher says, hmm, when do we want this book to come out?  Keep in mind, they need to think ahead, write ad copy, put the book in their brochure, and make sure the publication doesn’t interfere with other books being published.  They also think hard about when would be the best time of year to publish.  For example, if it’s the first book of a series, they may not want to publish in the summer, when fewer people are buying books.  (Or maybe they’ll prefer the summer because the book has a beach theme!)  Once they decide on a date, they’ll need to make sure they have enough time to plan publicity — making sure they can get the word out to bookstores, libraries, and teachers; scheduling author tours with schools and stores, etc.  All of this takes lots of advance planning.  Bookstores need to know well in advance, so they can decide which books they want to put on the shelves, what they’ll need to make room for, etc.  Once the publisher decides on a date (let’s say March 2014), they need to make sure the author gets the first draft in on time, usually more than a year in advance (so, January 2013).  Why a year?  Because you need a lot of time, care, and professional brainpower to make the book GREAT.  Here’s what happens:

a.  The editor goes over the book and makes comments for the author to improve the book.  This is crucial, because — well, none of us is the best judge of his or her own work!
b.  The author rewrites the book and submits the second draft.
c.  Repeat steps a. and b., one to three more times!
d.  A copyeditor reads the manuscript, looking at very particular things, like grammar, punctuation, and careless mistakes (for example, the book begins in the winter and people are in shorts, or the author refers to a street name that doesn’t exist).
e.  The author correct the mistakes and sends the copyeditor chocolate in deep gratitude.
f.  A proofreader goes over the book one more time.
g.  So does the author.
h.  The book is typeset into its final format.  The editor looks at it again.
i.  So does the author.  Sometimes changes are made here.
j.  Repeat steps h. and i.
k.  The book finally gets sent to a printer (meaning a printing company, not  a printer like the one on your windowsill!).  That printer has thousands of books waiting to be printed, so the job must take its place in order.  So it’s a good idea to get the project to them months in advance.
l.  Thousands of books are printed, bound, put in boxes, and shipped to warehouses.  Then they are sent out to libraries and stores.  The warehouses have a schedule too.  So it’s a good idea to get the books to them with a few weeks to spare, in case anything goes wrong.
m.  Whew.  That’s a lot of coordination.  So you see, for all of this, a year isn’t really such a long time!

It takes about nine months to a year to write a 39 CLUES book.  This includes researching, outlining, and actual writing.  For example, I began working on THE DEAD OF NIGHT in January 2010, finished writing the first draft in about January 2011, worked on revisions until May 2011, and theen the book was published in March 2012.
Whew.  That’s like asking a dad which child he loves the best.  The answer: all of them, of course!

Hiya Peter!

Still haven't read Shatterproof! :c The Day of Doom cover looks awesome! Have you read it yet? Can't wait to read The Seven Wonders. It will be great! Any news on a third series of The 39 Clues yet?
I hope there is another one. It's like it wouldn't be complete if they just ended it after we find out who Vesper One is and what he wants. I want to know how they end up. Like a few years older like in this series. What do you think will happen for the characters in a few years’ time?

Sincerely,
Monica

Hi, Monica.  I am about to read DAY OF DOOM and can’t wait!  Thanks for the kind words about SEVEN WONDERS.  Have you seen the new website?  We’ve revealed Chapter 1, plus a very funny video I made at Comic Con (link [pl-popup content="http://bit.ly/7WSite" title="SEVEN WONDERS website" width="1200" height="640"]here[/pl-popup]).  Yes, there is good news about a new 39 CLUES series!  It will be called UNSTOPPABLE, and it will contain four books, by Jude Watson, Jeff Hirsch, Natalie Standiford, and Gordon Korman.  Because of my schedule with SEVEN WONDERS, I wasn’t able to accept any of the books in UNSTOPPABLE, but don’t worry, you’ll be in great hands!  More details about that series [pl-popup content="http://bit.ly/PW_Unstop" title="Unstoppable" width="1000" height="640"]here[/pl-popup].

Hello again, Peter! Thanks for your reply on my other question. Now I have a personal question directed to YOU and your opinions. What do you think will happen in Day of Doom? Not what anyone else told you, or what David Baldacci revealed to the authors, but what you, as a reader, think or would think would happen in Day of Doom, not counting that you read Trust No One, if you did. I hope this isn't taking up your time! thanks, and good luck writing Seven Wonders!
Admin Reply:
I did read TRUST NO ONE, and I’m about to read DAY OF DOOM.  As a 39 CLUES writer, I also read the master outline for the series.  Because I kind of know what will happen, I have to disqualify myself from the question.  For me to pretend to be a reader guessing what would happen if I didn’t know what I already know would involve some mental gymnastics beyond my talents.  Whew, even thinking of it makes me want to take a nap.
Thanks for the kind wishes on SEVEN WONDERS!  Have you seen the new website?  I’m so psyched about it.  There's a sneak peek of Chapter 1 and also a pretty crazy video from Comic Con.  The link is [pl-popup content="http://bit.ly/7WSite" title="SEVEN WONDERS website" width="1200" height="640"]here[/pl-popup].

Anyway, have your heard of the third series in the 39 clues: unstoppable? If so do you know the name of the first book?
From Nicolas.

Hello, Nicolas! We met at Books of Wonder, right?  Great to hear from you.  Yes, I know all about UNSTOPPABLE.  Because of my writing schedule for my new series, [pl-popup content="http://bit.ly/7WSite" title="SEVEN WONDERS website" width="1200" height="640"]SEVEN WONDERS[/pl-popup], I wasn’t able to write one of the books in UNSTOPPABLE.  I don’t believe any of the titles have been determined yet.

I have 2 questions I want to ask.

1. Do you know the title of Book 6, The 39 Clues yet?

2. Do the authors always put the surprise element in the books? (e.g. ****** being Vesper 3 (no spoilers)

Thanks.

p.s. : Your Seven Wonders series- is it going to be published sometime during February 2013?"

#1: Yes, the title is DAY OF DOOM.  #2: All the major reveals of the series (such as Vespers IDs) are worked out in advance in the series outline.  And the bonus question:  Yes, February is correct — the 5th, to be exact!  Here’s a very cool new [pl-popup content="http://bit.ly/7WSite" title="SEVEN WONDERS website" width="1200" height="640"]SEVEN WONDERS website[/pl-popup] with more information.

It's great to see the reveal of the last book! It looks epic (I'm glad they went with red!)
I was wondering if you knew whether this final book would reach the length of Into The Gauntlet, because it looks like there is a lot still to be revealed and some sort of epic battle coming. Will it be lengthy?
Keep writing by the way, I'm keeping an eye on Seven Wonders and Infinity Ring, with the possibility of this series coming to an end 🙁 and you guys are the kind of writers that need to stay around!"

"Hey, Peter! Another devoted fan out here. So lately Day of Doom was announced, and i was even able to read Chapter One (or at least part of it). So I was wondering, if there are already excerpts for Day of Doom shouldn't there be excerpts for Trust No One? I mean, the book is probably already written - only 39 more days until its release, and I know it takes time to print copies and all, Roland announced Shatterproof was out earlier than that, so I'm thinking shouldn't there be Trust No One excerpts? They haven't even put up the book overview on T39C.com and Shatterproofs overview was out 41 days before the release date (I think, it was either that or 31), so this might be small but why are there no TNO excerpts? This might just be like taking away an extra bit 1 billion readers have their calendars marked on Dec. 4 so just wondering if you could help us out! Its ok if you don't respond, I know you're busy but please try to. Thanks!"

Hey Mr. Lerangis!
Guess what?! I think that I actually may have found a book series (three actually) that rival, most likely overtake, the thirty-nine clues. Ever heard of...Bryan Davis? Awesome writer. You HAVE to read his three dragon series, Dragons in Our Midst, Oracles of Fire, and Children of the Bard, -a series still in process. first, yo have to read The Eye of the ORacle, the first in the OOF, (Oracles of Fire) than the four Dragons in OUr Midst books, then starting at Enoch's Ghost, the second in the Oracles of Fire series, read those, then The Song of the Ovulum, and the From the MOuth of Elijah, the most recent of the Children of the Bard series, I haven't even read that one. I CAN"T WAIT TO!! AAAAAAAAAAAAAAH! Sorry, it ended ona major cliffhanger with...Never mind, don't wait to give it away! PLease pardon my spelling and capitalization, I'm in a big hurry! ~TempestEagle5

WHOAH.
I just read that there really is a third series. "Unstoppable". The logo is green. There is four books, with Korman, Watson, and two others. WHY ARE YOU NOT IN IT????????
Apart from the fact you aren't writing one, this day just keeps getting better and better!!!!!

Yes, Chris, it’s a great day, but with my new series, [pl-popup content="http://bit.ly/7WSite" title="SEVEN WONDERS website" width="1200" height="640"]SEVEN WONDERS[/pl-popup], my schedule was too full for the time I’d need to write a book in the UNSTOPPABLE series.  But Jeff and Natalie are fantastic writers, and you know how great Jude and Gordon are!  You’ll be in good hands.

I heard about you new book called the Seven Wonders. Is it about the Seven Wonders of the anicient world? because if so I know two of the ancient wornders, The Great Pyramids of Giza and the Spinx.
Admin Reply:
Hi, Lily!  Yes, the series is about the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, and we have a new website devoted to it [pl-popup content="http://www.sevenwondersbooks.com/" title="Seven Wonders series website" width="1200" height="640"]here[/pl-popup]! (If you click on “Extras” at the top of that page, you can read an excerpt from the book.)
And actually, you’re exactly half correct on your list.  Even at Comic Con, people had a tough time naming them all:

I just read somebody, please tell me who I am and I loved it! I was wondering though how does it exactly end? Does Ben regain his memory back fully? Does Ariela end up with Ben or Jared? Just wondering if their will be a sequel to it. Thanks!
Admin Reply:
Thank you, Mahala!  I hadn’t intended to write a sequel.  I wanted to leave the end open, to show a ray of hope in what will be a very long recovery.  I wanted the book to be realistic, like life, and these kinds of injuries require years of treatment, so a more happy ending would have felt false.  But it would be cool to pick up the story a year or so later and examine what happens.  I’ll have to think about this!  Many thanks for writing.

Hey, Peter! Hrrr! What do you think of Infinity Ring??? James Dashner came to my city!!! Have you read it yet? And when will 7 Wonders be published? Did you notice that some characters were rather OOC in Shatterproof? Those questions just SPILLED out of nowhere. Wow. Do you know anything about Trust No One yet? Thanks!!!!!!
Admin Reply:
Hrrr to you, too, Sapphire!  (Chris D. will get a kick out of reading that!)  I hope you got a chance to meet James Dashner.  He’s a great guy and a wonderful writer.  I haven’t yet read THE INFINITY RING but I’m looking forward to it, as I’m a huge fan of THE MAZE RUNNER.  I’m also a huge fan of Roland Smith and his writing, and I absolutely loved every part of SHATTERPROOF.  I am reading TRUST NO ONE now, and it’s also fantastic.  Wait till you see!  The first book of THE SEVEN WONDERS series will be published on February 5, but I decided to write a prequel called THE SEVEN WONDERS JOURNALS: THE SELECT, which will be available as a free eBook in December!

Mr. Lerangis -
Thanks for the tip. I just can't seem to get my stories more than a couple thousand words, but now I know a little more about the process of writing - you write multiple draft, so one draft is probably longer than the other.
By the way, in The Dead of Night, Ian Kabra is in *********, but then in Shatterproof he's back in Attleboro, with no explanation. What's up with that?
And how do you pronounce 'Kabra' and 'Spasky'? I was wrong about how to pronounce 'Lucian' and 'Cahill' at first, so I just want to know.
Admin Reply:
Hi, Truman.  Yes, with multiple drafts stories do get longer.  Also be sure to know exactly what each of your characters wants, not only in the story but in the scene.  Sounds obvious, but it’s super important.  No matter what they’re saying, they all want something.  It’s true in life, too.  The clearer idea you have about these wants, the more you’ll be able to spin out your story.  Regarding Ian, yes, I noticed that in SHATTERPROOF, too.  I think Ian just beat a hasty retreat to Attleboro and explained himself to Sinead’s satisfaction.  “Kabra” is pronounced like “cob” (as in corn on the cob) + “rah.”  “Spasky” rhymes with “mass key.”
