Oh. That makes sense.

It was nice meeting you yesterday! 🙂 Thanks for signing the books and for the cards as well. So... How exactly did your cell phone get to be in the back of a taxi? Also... Why do you have to type in what the pictures show right beneath the form for the guestbook entry? And are they really words? It says "Type the two words:", except some of them are just random letters and punctuation marks...
Admin Reply:
It was great to meet you too!  I enjoyed my return visit to Mrs. Nelson’s!  I’m not sure how I left my cell phone in the taxi.  I don’t recommend doing it!  Fortunately, though, the driver returned it to my hotel.  Whew.  And those weird characters you type in order to post to my Guestbook are necessary to avoid messages by spam bots. The method is called RECAPTCHA, and it requires you to type real words, nonsense words, words with punctuation marks, and/or numbers.  The distorted letters are generally in jpeg format, not text, so they can only be read by humans, not machines.  If I didn’t include this, my Guestbook would fill up with hundreds, if not thousands, of spam messages.

Mr.Lerangis

Well yes i am the same Anna that asked you for the next book a while ago. Well you know Katerina...we are friends and we have a fanclub on facebook (http://www.facebook.com/The39CluesFanclub) that one if you want like. Well you said that you are half greek. Are any relatives of yours at Greece and from which place at Greece are you from?(we both have the same question)

Thanks Anna
Admin Reply:
Hello, Anna.  I am 100% Greek!  All four of my grandparents emigrated from Greece.  My father’s side came from the area surrounding Sparta (Longastra and Gourani), and my mother’s side came from the island of Nysiros.  I still do have family in Greece, mostly in the Athens area, and in Rhodes and Nysiros.

Ah, thanks, Joseph!  I do appreciate the fans in Raleigh.  Actually I did visit there a couple of years ago.  You can see the schools and stores I visited by scrolling down to March 2010 on this page.   Everyone was awesomely friendly, and I hope to be back someday!

Hey Peter
I love your 39 clues books. I think that you are an amazing writer. I was wondering if you could give me some tips? I have written a book, which is about 30,000 words. I am really pleased with it, and I dream of getting it published. How do I get there? And do you have any other tips for me? I am only 14, and I feel like they will reject me because I'm young.
Thankyou!
Admin Reply:
Hi, Sarah!  I think you are in a great position, being only fourteen and yet having actually completed a novel of that length!  Without reading it or knowing anything about your work, it’s hard for me to recommend a path for you.  The traditional path is for a writer to contact agents and try to interest them in the work — and then the agent can pitch the book to a publishing house.  If you get a contract, you will have an editorial staff to help you shape the book, and a marketing and publicity staff to help spread the word and sell it.  You can also self-publish as an EBook and/or a hard copy, but you basically have to act as a publisher yourself.  I wouldn’t worry so much about rejection, though.  All authors experience rejection, even ones with tons of experience and published books.  It’s just part of the territory.  And don’t forget, even if you face rejection with one project, well, it’s just one book.  You have plenty of stories inside you, so you just write another one!  Often a writer’s first attempt isn’t published, but maybe the second or third is — and after that, a publisher will suddenly be interested in that first project after all.  I probably don’t need to tell you that it’s rare for an author to be published by a major publishing house at such a young age.  (It’s rare even for an OLD age!)  It does happen — Christopher Paolini and Gordon Korman jump to mind — but in most cases, it’s best to use this time to grow and improve as a writer.  You will only get better and better as you get older and continue your education.  That’s not to say your book is or isn’t publishable.  It may be absolutely brilliant.  So please take this as a general guideline, and please take along my best wishes on your writing journey.  I hope to see your name in print someday!

Hello again, Sir Lerangis! Just a question, do you have Ms. Jude Watson's (or Judy Blundell) email address and/or mailing address? I can't find any on her website. If you have it, could you please tell me? Thanks, in advance!
P.S. Have you received the letter and a little "something" I mailed to you?
Admin Reply:
Hi, Reneilda!  Judy likes to be contacted through Facebook messages, so that’s what I would recommend.  And yes, I did receive the mail just before I left, and thank you so much!

I was just wondering... Why is it that you capitalize The Dead of Night?
Admin Reply:
Interesting question!  Only a true writer would be curious about something like that!  I capitalize THE DEAD OF NIGHT in my messages because by default the Guestbook puts all my answers in italics (slanted type).  In text, titles of books are usually in italics.  But when the text itself is in italics, it’s necessary to do something else.  Putting the title in Roman (regular) type would be the best idea.  But it is strangely difficult to do that in this default style.  If I could figure out an easy way to do that, I would.  The next best thing is to place the titles of books in all-caps.  So that’s why you see book titles that way in my answers!

Dear Mr. Lerangis,
Hi, I'm Emma. I was one of the kids that went to West High during your visit there last month. Just wanted to tell you I really enjoyed it. 🙂 I recently finished Dead of NIght, I would have read it earlier but I wasn't done with the first and second books of the Cahills vs. Vespers series, and I wanted to finished those first. When I grow up, I want to be an author, like you. I really love to write! Do you have any advice for kids who want to be authors?
Thanks for coming to Iowa!
Admin Reply:
Hello, Emma!  Thanks for your kind words.  I’m glad you liked THE DEAD OF NIGHT.  I had such a great time at West High, and I loved visiting Iowa City.  As for being a writer, you are lucky to be starting so young. You have lots of time, to read, read, read. That’s the best way to become a writer. Read as much as you can. Read what you love. Try to figure out what your favorite authors do to make their books so vivid. What kind of words do they use? What words do they leave out? Every good story has a question that is not answered until the end. What is the question in your story? Try writing a story from beginning to end. It’s a great feeling to finish a story. You may want to show some of your stories to your teacher, or you may want to keep some stories to yourself. The important thing is to keep enjoying it and keep doing it. There are no shortcuts to being a writer. You need to keep doing it, and you will get better and better.  Good luck!

Admin Reply:
Hello, Anna!  The next book in the CAHILLS VS. VESPERS series is called SHATTERPROOF, and will be written by Roland Smith.  He is an awesome writer and we feel lucky to have him aboard.  As for the questions about future plot developments, as I wrote above (between the red diamonds), I’m not able to spoil any of those in advance.  Sorry!

Mr. Lerangis-

Does this mean you are leaving the 39 Clues, even if there's a third series?
Admin Reply:
Hi, Gergorivil! Wait. Does WHAT mean I'm leaving? What is the “this” of which you write?

I was thinking, in TDON, how did everyone forgive Isabel Kabra so easily? I mean, she committed various crimes, some of the murder! Thanks!
Admin Reply:
Hello, Karla. I don’t think any of the Cahills have forgiven Isabel, even though she has somehow managed to fool some very important people into thinking she has been rehabilitated.

Hi, Peter! I was just wondering, what gave you the idea for Jamy?

That was one of he many plot developments we all agreed to include in the big arc of our story.

Hello,Mr. Lerangis

I tottaly LOVE ''The 39 Clues'' they are the best series i ever read.I liked the book 3 but i didn't prefer when Ian left Amy in that cave in Korea.

It's one more thing.I am from Greece and i haven't read the 11th book only some pages. Will you come to Greece and if yes do you know when?

Yours,
Katerina

P.S If you come can you bring the 11th book? Thanks!
Admin Reply:
Hello, Katerina! Thanks so much for your kind words! As you may know, I am Greek American and I would love to return to Greece! No plans as of yet, but someday, when my work schedule allows ...  And yes, I agree with you about Ian.  That was a nasty move on his part!

This has nothing to do with writing or books, but I just wanted to ask: Do you like chocolate covered wafers/biscuits/cookies? And what is your favorite kind of chocolate? I like milk chocolate and white chocolate--but my mom said that technically, it shouldn't be called white chocolate because it isn't really chocolate. Just cocoa butter or something of the sort.

Back on topic, I wanted to point out something that I've been wondering for a while: In The Sword Thief, when they are pondering over the ToOTA thing, Amy was saying something about it being Toyota without the "y". Then Ian said something along the lines of, "I believe she is suggesting that the parchment is a fake." And this is the strange part: Dan said something about Mr. and Mrs. Kabra, and neither of them had any written reaction. Did you merely leave it out because you thought that it would take something away from Dan's realization, or did you simply not think about it?
Admin Reply:
Hi, Elizabeth!  I’m partial to dark chocolate, and your mom is right — white chocolate contains no chocolate.  It’s basically, well, sugared fat.  As for The Sword Thief, Dan was wise-cracking in that scene.  He was addressing Ian and Amy as “Mr. and Mrs. Kabra” — being a snarky little brother.  It was a quick aside, not really meant to be reacted to.  Even if Amy had reacted, all she really could have done was poke him, give him a slap, etc.  But (a) they were in the middle of something urgent, and (b) Dan didn’t even give them a chance to react.  He barrelled right on, saying “But it isn’t a fake.  Not at all.”  Hope that clears it up!

I found myself tempted to visit the "Cahill Web" earlier. It contained various different pieces of information that I had a look through, but i felt I was wasting my time. Do you think anything of relevance to the Vespers might be hidden in there, or not? It seemed to be only things to do with the Clue Hunt.
Admin Reply:
Hi, Chris!  I’m not sure I can advise whether or not you’d be wasting your time, but I believe the Cahill Web was set up during the first series, so probably not a lot about the Vespers.

Hi Peter,
You are a fantastic author. I am a really big fan of your writing and LOVE The 39 Clues series. All I ask is there going to be AmIan????
(AmIan is Amy + Ian)

Thank you.
P.S There has been some talk about a 39 Clues movie and a third series for The 39 Clues. Are these rumours true?
Admin Reply:
Hi, Zara!  Thanks so much for those lovely words!  I appreciate them.  As for Amian, that’s in the hands of the other authors now.  I don’t know what they have in mind.  The movie rights are with Dreamworks and we have still not heard fom them about casting, dates, anything.  So it’s still totally up in the air.  As are any plans for another series.  We authors would be the first to know, and we know nothing yet.  So you can ignore any rumors.  Sorry I don’t have any more concrete news than that!

Hi, Maddie!  Nope, I haven’t read it, but my son did, and he loved it!  And I’m okay with either greeting, maybe a slight preference for Mr. Lerangis.
