Hi mr. Peter,
I love to read and write. And there's this one story I've been working on that's 39 clues related ( I'm not going to try to publish it or anything) and I've been enjoying ever second writing that story. However my grades in school aren't that great and my parents said that I need to work harder in school and less on the story. Does this mean I have to quit my love for writing? And what do you recommend I do?
Admin Reply:
Hi, Amber!  I’m a big advocate of doing it all.  Do better in school AND write your story.  Get help in the subjects for which you need it.  Get those grades up.  It doesn’t mean giving up anything.  It might mean adjusting your time commitments for awhile, that’s all.  Once you’re doing bettter, no one will complain about the time spent writing.  Your story won’t go away, and neither will your love for writing.  Chances are you’re stuck with that for life!

I am an adult and enjoyed Smiler's Bones. It was engaging, but the ending tale about your visit to his grave made it complete for me. Thank you.

Thank you so much for writing, Trina. I appreciate it and I'm delighted you enjoyed the book.  That visit was so moving for my wife and me, and I'm glad it affected you too.

Hi Mr.Lerangis,
I am so excited to see you at Daniels Middle School next week. I already preordered your new book. I am going to read your other ones! What is your favorite? You seem like a great writer with a great imagination. Have you ever encountered anything that you put in your books? I hear you love rock climbing and chocolate. Do you still like to sing?

Your reader,
Megan Sawatzky

Hi, Megan!  That's great.  If you haven’t read any of the 39 Clues books, I would recommend them. I do encounter some of things in my books, although the monsters usually occur only in dreams, thank goodness.  Yup, I still like to sing.  I’m just not sure if other people like it when I sing.

Hello Mr. Peter would like to ask you if you do enjoy going to schools? I'm asking this because I hear that you do, but I want to hear it from you. You can be bored right. By the way do you even get bored answering lots of questions from students or do you enjoy it. That is all I need to ask you and thank you.
From Ruby

Hi, Ruby!  It’s true, I do enjoy doing it and I never, ever get bored.

Hi!

I think you might've answered/not answered this from someone else before, but it is driving me nuts! How come Dan drank the serum in both the end of book 5 and the beginning of book 6? I know it wasn't the *real* serum (Ick! "A puree of beets, brussels sprouts, and collard greens"!) but it still didn't make much sense.

Hi, Aurora!  Hm, since I didn’t write either of those, I’m not quite sure.  I can only assume David B just rolled back a bit in time in order to open the book in a dramatic way?

Hi Peter, It's me again, Nicolas.
Has scholastic thought about doing a 39 clues/infinity ring crossover book?
I think it is a great idea.
Don't you?

Thanks, Nicolas

Dear Peter,
Thanks for visiting Avoca West for the 2nd time in less than a year. I am reading your 1st book (the Colossus Rises)and I love it so far. I am willing to read your 39 clues series next. Also I would like to ask (if polite) Are you married and have children? I would also like to ask for some advice for writing because I started a writing notebook for writing and I am not so good at it. I hope you can answer me by Feb. 9, 2013.

Thank you very much,
Ellie Song (Avoca West Student)
Admin Reply:
Hello, Ellie!  Yes, I am married and I have two sons.  Thank you for your kind words about THE COLOSSUS RISES.  It’s good to keep a notebook.  Try just writing down very short ideas.  Anything that appeals to you!  You may see a squirrel climbing a tree and wonder what would happen if it scurried into a hole in the tree and found an animal genie in the form of a hawk.  Or you might go to the grocery store and see a mysterious-looking cashier who reminds you of a wizard.  What if he or she really is one, and sells you a magic candy bar?  What if you see a stray dog and it’s really a person who has traveled in time and is stuck in an animal’s body?  Or you may be more interested in a realistic story based on your experience or someone you know.  Try stretching your imagination to things you see and things you know.  You don’t have to write much, just a few sentences about this and that.  Anything goofy or realistic or dramatic, or interesting in any way that pops into your head.
Maybe you want to develop one of the ideas into a story.  Every good story has a conflict, a dilemma that keeps you in suspense until the very end.  See if you can create one for your story.
Most of all, write a story that really excites you.  The more it comes from YOU and expresses your interests, skills, excitements, humor, etc., the more exciting it will be for you to write.  And it’s a good bet that if it’s fun for you, it will be fun for others to read.  The important thing is to keep enjoying it, keep doing it, and don’t be afraid to try out some wild ideas.  The #1 secret to becoming a good writer is practice, practice, practice.
One more important thing:  Read as much as you can.  Read what you enjoy.  Good writers are always good readers.  You can learn from your favorite authors.  Try to figure out what they do to make their books so vivid and exciting.  What kind of words do they use?  What words do they leave out?  Sometimes your favorite authors will influence your own style of writing.
Hope this helps, Ellie.  Good luck!

Dear Mr. Peter Lerangis,
You came to Avoca West a few days ago and I am a 5th grader there. I want to be a writer but When I write essays and paragraphs, all my parents and teachers say"This essay does not make sense." What should I do to be a better writer?
Admin Reply:
I think the best thing to do is ask questions: WHY doesn’t it make sense?  What can I do to make it make sense?  Be persistent until you get a good answer.  Maybe your teachers need to explain a little more.  Don’t forget, you need to be satisfied with their answers to your questions too.  Another thing you can do is stop in the middle of your essay and read it aloud to someone, and make them stop you when they hear something they don’t understand.  Ask them how you can make it better.  (Sometimes when you hear yourself reading your own work, you automatically think of ways to improve it.  That’s a funny thing, but it often helps.). All of this may seem as if it slows you down, but it’s worth it.  As you get better, you get faster.  Good luck to you!  I really enjoy visiting your school.

Dear "Dude", We are your biggest fans. It was awesome to have you visit our school yesterday. Thank you for coming. You were hilarious. We loved your baby pictures. They were very funny. You are the coolest. We also loved your funny voices. We watched the trailer for The Colossus Rises. We really like it. And we hope you will make a movie of it too. Do you know what the name of the third book will be?

Your friends from Mrs. Russell's class

Hello, friends in Mrs. Russell’s class!  I had a blast meeting you all.  Thanks for welcoming me so beautifully, and for all your kind words.  It means a lot to me.  So far the title for Book 3 is “Book 3.” I haven’t thought of anything better yet! (But I’ll take all suggestions!)  Keep reading and writing!  Thanks again from the Dude.

Do you like R.L Stine because I love his Goosebumps books?

Hi, Jackson.  Yes, I do.  As a matter of fact, he and I are pals.  We visited Moscow together, flew on Air Force One, and had dinner with the president of Russia, along with the amazing Marc Brown.  So we’re all big fans of one another!
